Image Awards nominations are in: Tyler Perry leads with two nods

The NAACP Image Awards unveiled its nominations for the 44th annual image awards. Actor, writer and director Tyler Perry led the way with two nominations for his movie “Good Deeds.” He also received an outstanding actor nomination for his role as the black detective in the movie “Alex Cross.” Actress and singer Tatyana Ali also garnered two nominations for her role in the CBS daytime drama “The Young and the Restless” and a best actress nomination for the TV One sitcom “Love That Girl.”

Other nominees included outstanding actor in a motion picture contenders Denzel Washington for “Flight,” Jamie Foxx for “Django Unchained,” Morgan Freeman for “The Magic of Belle Isle,” Suraj Sharma for “Life of Pi.” The outstanding actress nominees are Emayatzy Corinealdi for “Middle of Nowhere,” Halle Berry for “Cloud Atlas,” Loretta Devine for “In the Hive,” Quvenzhane Wallis for “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and Viola Davis for “Won’t Back Down.”

In the outstanding supporting actor category, David Oyelowo was nominated for “Middle of Nowhere,” Don Cheadle for “Flight,” Dwight Henry for “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Lenny Kravitz for “The Hunger Games” and Samuel L. Jackson for “Django Unchained.”

Nominees were announced during a live press conference from the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills by actors Anthony Anderson (“Guys with Kids”), Niecy Nash (“The Soul Man”), Yvette Nicole Brown (“Community”), Garcelle Beauvais (Flight) and Tyler James Williams (“Go On”).

The NAACP Image Awards celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of film, television, music and literature and honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors. Winners of the prestigious awards will be announced during a live two-hour telecast on Feb. 1, 2013 on NBC.
