Nigerian Plane Crash Survivor wows ‘America’s Got Talent’ Judges

I was distracted by the tears flowing down the cheeks of a sister as she sat viewing a segment of popular TV series; “America Got Talent”. I promptly asked; “who is creating so much emotions?” she replied, “Poor sweet plane crash survivor with burn scars all over her body, she sang her heart out…” Apparently, the performance was by Kechi Okwuchi, the Nigerian native who was one of only two survivors in a plane crash in 2005 that killed 107.

Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Abuja that crashed as it attempted to land at the Port Harcourt International Airport on 10 December 2005. The plane, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 with 109 people on board slammed into the ground and burst into flames. Immediately after the crash, seven survivors were recovered and taken to hospitals, but only two people survived, Kechi being one of them.  Port Harcourt Airport had one fire truck and no ambulances.

Kechi Okwuchi, then only 16 years old, was badly burned and treated at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa as of 14 December 2005, and at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Texas, United States as of 6 September 2007.

Over 75 Surgeries Later, Kechi Okwuchi exuded her Beautiful Personification of Faith and Strength as she performed in front of Howie Mandel, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Simon Cowell. Okwuchi blew away the audience and judges with her performance of Ed Sheeran’s 2014 single “Thinking Out Loud” at a recent episode.
